Frequently Asked Questions
1. What should I bring?
Bring your own favourite snack and/or beverage. If you’ll be sticking around, feel free to bring your own favourite mug or glass to use throughout.
If you plan on watching more than one movie in a row, consider bringing a seat cushion. We have done more work on our theatre, but space will be at a premium and some of the chairs may be wooden. Need we say more?
We have established a tradition of ordering pizza for supper on Saturday night. You are encouraged to drop $5 in the bowl to help defray the costs, but don’t worry about going hungry if you forget your wallet at home.
2. What should I wear?
The only requirement for the whole weekend is for Opening Night on Friday. Suggested dress is black and white formal, or informal. Wear a tux, or a white t-shirt and black jeans. Creativity is encouraged! After Opening Night, it’s down to business and you’re free to spend the rest of the weekend in your pj’s if you wish.
3. May I smoke?
In the past, smoking of cigars has been restricted to Café Voltaire. This year, for the sake of non-smoking café faithful, smoking in the café will be restricted to after midnight. Smoking will be permitted at all times on the deck and in surrounding fields.
4. May I bring my children?
In the early years of the festival, movies for children were shown in a separate room. However, due to space restrictions, the children’s festival has had to be cancelled. Many of the films shown at the PHFF may be unsuitable for children. We are sorry about this, but as Anna Harder once said, "it gives the children something to look forward to when they grow up!"
5. What must I do to be part of the Critics’ Choice Panel?
All audience members get to vote after every film. However, if you want to be a member of the select group which votes for the Critics’ Choice Award, you must watch a minimum of 10 films.
6. Where did the name "Pretty Hill" come from?
Many people believe that the Olson family named their hilltop location "Pretty Hill" because of the view. This is pure fallacy! The fact is that Pretty Hill was named in the 1800's after Chief Pretty, who died in a battle there between the Cree and Blackfoot tribes. Early settlers later discovered his grave on the hill. Old CPR maps actually show Pretty Hill as being the only point between Camrose and New Sarepta along the railway line, and the Camrose Canadian includes "Pretty Hill News" in editions dated in the early 1900's.
7. How do I get there?
See MAP for driving instructions.
